Introducing Happiness Into Your Life
We all want to be happy, even if we’re feeling down and we think that we don’t. We deserve to be happy.
It’s true. Being happy isn’t a privilege or a condition of your economic status, it’s how you are born into this world and it’s how you are supposed to feel most of the time. We have so many things to be happy about, when you take the time to think about it.
So, for the first exercise, you will need your journal, a good pen, and some peace. For five minutes, write down everything that makes you happy. No one is going to read this, so you can write down the silly stuff that we all privately enjoy.
Maybe you like the fact that the coffee shop puts cinnamon on the top of the whipped cream, or the way your dog looks at you when he or she wants to go outside. It really, truly doesn’t matter.
It might take you a moment to get going, but once you start, you’ll find that five minutes means a lot of things to be happy about.
How do you feel right now?
Relaxed? More saddened? Guilty? Those are all fine emotions at this point, and it’s okay to feel something other than happiness right now. What we’re trying to do right now is see that there are bright spots in our lives, even if we don’t always remember them.
What you can also do is try to repeat this exercise every day. Don’t worry, you will always find something that makes you happy. Maybe it didn’t rain or you found a good parking spot.
Try to write down five things (at least) that make you happy. You can do this first thing in the morning, or before you go to bed. It’s funny, but just the act of noticing our own happiness can evoke more.
Have you ever woken up on the wrong side of the bed one morning? Of course you have, we all have. You get out of bed, stub your toe. Ouch! Then as you’re cursing about that, you hit your head on something, and as you’re upset about that, you yell at someone, so that makes them upset. The whole day can snowball from that little toe of yours.
When you take the time to notice the things that did go right, that too can snowball. But as you stubbed your toe, maybe you missed the fact that you didn’t have to fight over the covers the night before with your spouse or significant other. Or maybe it’s going to be a sunny day when rain was predicted.
By noticing things that make you happy, then you are inviting happiness and change to be a part of your life.
